The Bekal Fort is the historical icon and largest fort of Kerala with massive structure on the shore of Arabian Sea around 16 kms south of Kasragod town. Its an attractive village with so many colorful traditions and rituals. There are 14 rivers flowing through Kasargod and which creates so many estuaries and river banks with seductive beauty. New toursim projects in the districts indicate that it will be the beaken of Kerala Toursim for the coming era.
History of Bekal
Bekal region l was under the sovereignty of Kolathunad when it became an important maritime hub and an important harbour town of Thulunadu (older Kasaragod district). Later, realising the political and economic significance of Thulunadu, many laudatory chieftains consecutively attacked and annexed this part of the country. The monetary importance of the port town prompted the Jeheri Nayak dynasty to fortify Bekal.
The Bekal Fort was finished speedily during the era of Sivappa Nayak to defend the port from overseas attack. The Chandragiri Fort near Kasaragod was also constructed during this time.
It is supposed that the “Kotteyar” community found in Bekal, Panayal and other places in Kasaragod were brought here by the Nayaks to put up and defend the forts. Bekal subsequently fell into the hands of the Mysore Sultans.
It then served as an important martial station of Tipu Sultan when he led the great military mission to Malabar. Coins and other artifacts unearthed by archaeologists’ excavation at the Bekal Fort are a hint of the occupancy of the Mysore Sultans.
Years later, the East India Company made Bekal the headquarters of the newly structured Bekal Taluk of the South Canara District of Bombay Presidency. South Canara then became a part of the Madras Presidency in 1862 and Kasaragod Taluk was set up in place of Bekal Taluk. slowly the political and economic importance of Bekal and its port declined by a long way.
